BEWARE: The Office of the Fayette County Sheriff is warning Lexington residents of a telephone scam that has developed within the last week.

The caller claims that someone in the household has an unpaid fine, a missed grand jury appearance, and/or an arrest warrant. The caller, who falsely identifies himself as a Fayette County Deputy Sheriff, informs people they must now pay a fine. The caller has asked victims to purchase a pre-paid or re-loadable money card and then provide the "deputy" with the card number over the phone to settle the fine. This telephone number is fraudulent and the caller is not associated with the Office of the Fayette County Sheriff.

The Office of Sheriff advises everyone to be cautious of calls that request payment or access to personally identifiable information, regardless of who the caller claims to represent. The Office of the Fayette County Sheriff will never ask you for money over the phone or threaten you with arrest if you do not pay a fine.
If you are contacted, DO NOT send money and contact the Office of the Fayette County Sheriff immediately at (859) 252-1771
